The construction of the building was started in 2005 and completed in 2009. The tower is situated at 401 North Wabash Avenue in the River North Gallery District and houses 486 luxury condominium residences and four-star Trump International Hotel with 339 guest rooms. The building also includes retail space, a parking garage, health club and four-star spa (one of the three four-star spas of the city), executive lounges. Fine-dining restaurant named Sixteen located on the 16th floor, which offers its customers to celebrate the extravagant diversity of fresh foods and high class drinks. This is one of the seven four-star restaurants of Chicago. The building is praised for its location, which provides as many views along the Chicago River as possible.
The architectural and structural design made by Chicago based famous Skidmore Owings & Merrill. The design of the building incorporates three setback features designed to provide visual continuity with the surrounding skyline, each reflecting the height of a nearby building. The curves of the building and the strategic setbacks also serve to minimize and redistribute Chicago strong winds.
The entire building structure is made of reinforced concrete, for façade used clear low-emissivity coated glass and a curved wing-shaped polished stainless steel mullion system which provides thermal efficiency and creates floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall views from within the building's residences and hotel rooms.
Fodor's, the world's largest publisher of travel and tourism information notes, that the hotel has impeccable service and lavish amenities, but also notes that the hotel may be a bit "too decadent", with offerings such as $25 for bottle of water.
