Shoshkavank, Martuni
Shoshkavank monastery is located between the villages Msmna and Kavahan of the Martuni region of Nagorno Karabakh. That`s why it`s ranked among the sights of both villages. A thorough examination of the area revealed that there was also another medieval cult building which was probably destroyed during the invasions. The monastery Surb Astvatsatsin church (Holly Virgin) was built in 1651 from the stones of previous structures as well as medieval khachkars (cross-stones) and gravestones.
Sourb Astvatsatsin church is a single-nave building. The altar apse is in a rectangular prayer-house. Pair of pylons supports the vaulted cover. The altar stage is decorated with images of crosses. One can see the traces of destroyed structures (probably vestibule and utility structure) around the church.
Not long ago Surb Astvatsatsin church was reconstructed by means of businessmen Babayan brothers and support of local resident Tigran Khachatryan. It was reconstructed in accordance with old photos and drafts. Surb Astvatsatsin church was consecrated in November 2009. The first public liturgy after a long recess was served by the head of Artsakh diocese Archbishop Pargev Martirosyan.
